If you use CHI Attics for your attic conversion you will get an excellent job at a very fair price. It may not the cheapest price, but, for the effort and quality we put into every job, we guarantee it will the best value for money. However, if you are not using CHI Attics then here are the things you should watch out for. THE CONTRACTOR Should give you a substantial list of recommendations, not just a few local ones. Should give you his permanent address and landline number. Should be listed in the telephone directory. It’s free, so is there a reason why not? Should have employer’s and public liability insurance. Should be able to give you a VAT receipt. Should be able to give you a ‘Certificate of Compliance’ when finished. THE WORKS The roof rafters (above your head) should be doubled up. (in a trussed roof) The windows should be large enough to act as ‘fire escape’ windows, and no higher than 1 metre from the floor. The attic door should have a ½ hour fire rating. The insulation should be a minimum of 100mm of Kingspan, no less. There should be an ‘airflow’ gap of at least 2 inches between insulation and roofing felt. The steel beams should be sized according to the distance to be spanned. You should be given a ‘wired’ smoke alarm at the top of new stairs. DO NOT Hand over a large sum of money before work commences. Pay the final balance until your snag list is completed to your satisfaction.
