The existing building at Coolnagreina has been modified many
times over the years to provide more appropriate
accommodation and facilities and to meet the needs of the
increasing range of visitors and guests. It can now no
longer be upgraded within its current structure and
struggles to provide the type of accommodation and
facilities that are necessary.
The YWCA is upgrading its facility to continue its work. It
also plans to develop a youth drop-in centre using Cooleen,
otherwise known as the man-house! Work has commenced on the
building of a new accommodation block. The upgraded
facilities will include and allow:
• 25 spacious en-suite bedrooms
• An increase in the number of conference and training rooms
• A library/reading room
• A youth drop-in centre or café
Plans of the new development are available on request.
The committee, management and staff of Coolnagreina are
excited by the scope of and potential of the new programmes
which the new facility will provide. Guests will be
able to avail of additional, upgraded facilities which
include:
- Larger accommodation of 24 en-suite bedrooms
- Improved recreational space and meeting room facilities
The total cost of the project is €3 million. So far the YWCA has raised
€2,675,000. The shortfall of €325,000 is needed to fit-out the building and
landscape the grounds to enable the centre to open in March 2012.
If you are would like to assist financially or in any other way to help continue
the work at Coolnagreina, please talk to the manager, Jonathan Ellis or
click here to visit our donations page. We would be
happy to help with any questions you have.
In order to act as a staff residence and as a youth centre
and in order to retain the character and historic importance
of the site, the two existing houses will be retained
as part of this development project.
